In fact, it is often a belief among many scholars and such that the blue whale is probably the largest animal to have ever lived. That alone makes these beautiful creatures extremely special and worth the effort to keep around.
These large ocean living mammals can grow to be over one hundred and ten feet in length and weigh in around two hundred tons. That’s a huge mass of weight and energy which explains why they also eat a massive amount of food.
Blue whales mostly feast on krill. Krill is a small ocean crustacean and it is not uncommon for a single whale to eat up to four million krill in one single day.
Other things they may take a liking to eating are small fish and also a squid on occasion.
There was once a time when the Antarctic alone was home to over two hundred thousand blue whales, however, due to over hunting (whaling) their numbers have dwindled to around seven thousand around the world.
The small number that remain live in approximately five different groups.
Thanks to an International community that took interest in the possible extinction of the blue whale in the mid nineteen sixties, their numbers are on the rise and although they are clear not completely safe yet, they are getting out of the woods of becoming extinct.
